The coronavirus is turning Columbia City Hall blue.

Starting Friday night, Columbia’s city hall will be highlighted in blue lights in appreciation of the work done by health care workers to combat the coronavirus outbreak.

“As our community collectively deals with the effects of Covid-19, we know that our healthcare workers are on the front line working hard to care for our friends and neighbors,” said Councilwoman Tameika Isaac Devine. “We want to let them know that we appreciate them and are keeping them in our prayers.”

Columbia will join landmarks in other cities, from Los Angeles to Atlanta to Cleveland, that are being bathed in blue in recognition of doctors, nurses and emergency workers who are most immediately exposed to the virus.

The number of cases in South Carolina has now topped 3,000, with 452 of those in Richland County, the most in the state.

City hall will be blue for at least the next two weeks, with the possibility the lights could stay in place for longer as the crisis continues, the city said in a statement on Friday.
