Driver ‘disregarded’ stop sign, caused deadly crash on Midlands road, highway patrol says
A teenage driver “disregarded a stop sign” Tuesday, causing a fatal collision on a Midlands road, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The deadly crash occurred at 7 a.m. at the intersection of US-301 and Jack Touchberry Road in Clarendon County, Lance Cpl. David Jones said.
The 17-year-old driver of 2002 GMC pickup truck was heading north on Jack Touchberry Road when he “disregarded a stop sign,” and collided with a 2011 Lexus, according to Jones.
S.C. Highway Patrol reported that the Lexus was traveling south on US-301 when it was struck in the side at the intersection of the roads.
The driver of the Lexus was not wearing a seat belt, and was ejected from the vehicle as it overturned, Jones said.
Jones reported that the Lexus driver was taken to an area hospital and later died there from injuries suffered in the wreck.
Although the teen driving the GMC was wearing a seat belt, he was also taken to an area hospital with injuries, according to Jones.
There is no word on the teen driver’s condition, or if any criminal charges will be filed as a result of the fatal crash.
The identity of the driver who was killed from injuries sustained in the collision will be released by the Clarendon County Coroner.
The crash remains under investigation by the S.C. Highway Patrol.
