A busy stretch of a major Columbia road will be closed for hours because of a gas leak, potentially affecting the evening commute.

The Columbia Fire Department tweeted that Garners Ferry Road will be closed as repairs are made to a cut gas line.

The section of the road that has been closed is in between True Street and Old Woodlands Road, according to the fire department’s tweet. That is located near Dorn VA Medical Center in addition to several retail businesses, including a Target.

It is expected to take “several hours” to fix the gas leak, the fire department tweeted. Drivers are told to plan to find alternate routes to avoid the closed section of Garners Ferry.

There is no word on how the gas line was cut.
