Downtown Columbia street blocked after powerlines, traffic lights fall

Part of a downtown street was blocked after power lines and traffic lights fell to the roadway, according to a Tweet from the S.C. Department of Public Safety.

Sumter Street from Gervais Street to Pendleton Street was blocked Monday afternoon, according to a noon Tweet from the department.

Columbia Police and University of South Carolina police were called to the scene.

The Department of Public Safety urges drivers to go around the area.

An Ohio police officer reminds motorists not to treat malfunctioning traffic lights as a green light. Instead, use caution and treat the intersection like a four-way stop.
