Crash closes section of major highway outside of Columbia for hours, SC officials say

A multi-vehicle crash blocked a section of a major highway outside of Columbia, and affected the evening commute.

The crash occurred on Interstate 20 at the 33 mile marker, according to a tweet from the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

All of the eastbound lanes on I-20 were blocked, according to the tweet.

Injuries have been reported in the crash that occurred just after 3 p.m., including entrapment, per the highway patrol.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation said on Twitter that the lanes are expected to be blocked for hours. At 5 p.m., SCDOT tweeted the lanes had been cleared, but “motorists should expect some traffic as congestion clears.”

This is expected to create issues for drivers on the evening commute, and SCDOT urged them to find alternative routes of travel, according to its initial tweet.

Anyone in the area is asked to use caution, by highway patrol.
