Crash blocks traffic on highway in Columbia as travelers hit road after Thanksgiving
A crash had drivers stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic on a major interstate running through Columbia Sunday afternoon, according to the South Carolina Department of Transportation.
The collision occurred at about 12:45 p.m. on Interstate 26, blocking two eastbound lanes near Exit 125, SCDOT tweeted. That is the Old Sandy Run Road exit in Calhoun.
Injuries were reported in the wreck, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.
Information on the number of vehicles involved, and the extent of the injuries was not available.
SCDOT cameras showed a highway that looked like a parking lot as travelers hit the road at the end of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
All lanes were reopened around 1:30 p.m., according to SCDOT.
Another collision was reported in that same area at about 2 p.m. resulting in more lane closures, SCDOT said on Twitter.
It was one of several collisions reported on Midlands road Sunday.
A westbound lane on Interstate 20 was closed between Exit 65 and Exit 64A, from another crash, SCDOT tweeted.
Multiple collisions were also reported on Interstate 77 earlier Sunday, and congestion was reported on several areas of the highway, in addition to I-26 and I-20 in the afternoon, according to SCDOT.
