Coroner identifies pickup truck driver killed in crash on Midlands highway

One person died overnight Monday in a single-vehicle collision on a highway running through the Midlands, South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

The wreck happened at about 11 p.m. on U.S. 178, near the intersection with Spencer Road, Lance Cpl. Matt Southern said. That is less than 60 miles south of Columbia.

The driver of a 2015 Chevrolet was heading east on the highway when the pickup truck ran off the right side of the road, according to Southern.

The Chevy hit a ditch before smashing into a culvert, Highway Patrol reported.

Samuel Aull was identified as the driver, according to a news release from Orangeburg County Coroner Sean Fogle.

The 40-year-old Orangeburg resident was not wearing a seat belt and was killed at the scene, Southern said.

Aull’s death was called accidental by the coroner.

No one else was in the truck during the crash, according to Southern.

Information on what led to the truck running off the road was not available, but the collision remains under investigation by Highway Patrol.
