Two killed and two kids seriously injured in Midlands-area car crash, SC coroner says
Two people were killed in a Saturday night crash on a Midlands-area road that left two children hospitalized, the Aiken County Coroner’s Office said.
The two-vehicle collision occurred at about 9 p.m. on Charleston Highway, Coroner Darryl Ables said in a news release. The road also known as U.S. 78 runs through Windsor and is less than 50 miles south of Columbia.
A 2015 Nissan was heading east on the road when it made a left turn and was hit by a 2007 Chrysler 300 that was headed in the opposite direction on U.S. 78, according Cpl. Sonny Collins of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The driver and a front-seat passenger in the Nissan died at the scene, Collins said.
Two kids in the Nissan were seriously injured, Ables said. The children were taken to Augusta University Medical Center, and were listed in serious condition, according to the release.
Further information on their condition was not available.
The coroner’s office will publicly identify the people killed in the wreck after notifying their families.
Autopsies are scheduled for both crash victims on Monday in Newberry, Ables said.
A passenger in the Chrysler suffered minor injuries, according to Collins. No other injuries were reported.
Information on possible criminal charges was not available.
The wreck is being investigated by Highway Patrol.
