A Columbia man was killed when he was hit by a vehicle early Tuesday morning, the Lexington County Coroner’s Office said.

Jose G. Pineda died at the scene after the collision that occurred at about 3 a.m., Coroner Margaret Fisher said in a news release.

The 24-year-old was a passenger in a car that had an issue in the 1900 block of Old Dunbar Road in West Columbia, according to the release. Several industrial businesses are located in that area near the junction with Interstate 26.

The car was stopped and Pineda was checking on the issue when he was hit, Fisher said.

There is no word on possible criminal charges, but the death is being investigated by the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department.
