Driver killed after hitting pole, flipping car in Midlands-area crash ID’d by coroner
One person is dead following a single-vehicle collision on a Midlands-area road Saturday night, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.
The man killed in the wreck was identified as Randall Chowning, according to Clarendon County Coroner Bucky Mock.
The 55-year-old Turbeville man died from injuries he sustained in the collision Mock called an accident.
The crash occurred just before 6 p.m., Lance Cpl. Tyler Tidwell said.
Chowning was driving a 2007 Nissan Altima heading east on Barrineau Road, just outside of Turbeville, according to Tidwell. That’s about 70 miles east of Columbia.
The Altima ran off the left side of the road and Chowning corrected before running off the left of the road a second time, Tidwell said.
The Nissan then went over a ditch and hit a pole, causing the car to flip and eject Chowning who was not wearing a seat belt, according to Tidwell.
The driver was the only person in the car, and was taken to an area hospital where he died, Highway Patrol reported.
Of the 938 people who have died on South Carolina roads this year in wrecks, nearly 300 had access to a seat belt but did not wear the safety restraints, according to the Department of Public Safety.
This collision continues to be investigated by Highway Patrol.
