Multi-vehicle crash blocks all traffic heading to Lexington on major road, police say
One of the busiest roads in Lexington was blocked Tuesday morning following a multi-vehicle crash, the police said.
The wreck was reported at about 11 a.m., the Lexington Police Department said on Twitter.
The collision occurred at the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Old Cherokee Road, according to the tweet. That is in a busy area, where several restaurants and retail businesses are located, including a nearby Walmart Supercenter and Publix Super Market.
All inbound lanes to Lexington on Sunset were blocked, police said.
Three vehicles were involved in the collision, and two people were taken to an area hospital with minor injuries, Inspector Melissa Silcox told The State.
Further information on crash victims’ conditions was not available.
Detours have been set up diverting traffic onto Old Cherokee, but delays are expected.
Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area while emergency responders work on assisting people injured in the wreck and clearing the road.
Shortly after noon, police reported the road had reopened, saying “Please be careful traveling on this busy holiday today.”
The crash was caused by a driver who failed to yield to oncoming traffic, Silcox said.
Information on any possible criminal charges was not available.
South Carolina Highway Patrol reminds people traveling during the Christmas holiday week to take caution, whether it’s on a long road trip or a short drive to go shopping.
“Have a merry Christmas but stay safe!” the South Carolina Department of Public Safety tweeted.
