Collision blocks holiday traffic on interstate running through Columbia

A Sunday afternoon crash had drivers stuck in traffic on a Midlands stretch of interstate, the South Carolina Department of Transportation said.

The collision occurred just before 1 p.m. on Interstate 26, SCDOT said on Twitter.

The wreck occurred on the eastbound lanes of I-26, near mile marker 129, according to the tweet. That is in the area between Lexington and Calhoun counties, close to Exit 129, the junction with U.S. 21.

One lane was closed, and it was delaying drivers heading in the direction from Columbia to Charleston.

All of the eastbound lanes were reopened at about 2:15 p.m., SCDOT tweeted. Traffic cameras showed the highway remained congested.

Information on injuries and the number of vehicles involved in the crash was not available.

There was no word if the weather played a factor in the crash, but it was raining in the Midlands when it occurred.

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety reported another collision nearby on U.S. 21 at 1:45 p.m., saying there were no injuries in that wreck.

It was one of several collisions in the area reported by SCDOT, with drivers being delayed on other stretches of I-26 and S.C. 126.
