Crash blocks traffic heading toward Columbia on major interstate

Drivers heading to Columbia Monday morning encountered delays on a major interstate following a collision that blocked traffic.

The crash occurred at about 7:15 a.m. on Interstate 20, the South Carolina Department of Transportation said on Twitter. It took about 30 minutes for the highway to completely reopen, SCDOT reported.

An eastbound lane was blocked near Exit 61 on the stretch of I-20 that runs through Lexington County, according to the tweet. That’s the exit with a junction to U.S. 378, heading toward Lexington and West Columbia.

No injuries were reported in the collision, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.

SCDOT cameras showed traffic was bottled up behind a truck.

The delays were longer because drivers were unable to move into the open lane since a concrete barrier separated them as part of an ongoing traffic shift on the highway to widen the road.

Cars were flowing smoothly in the left lane, SCDOT cameras showed.

The truck was moved and both lanes were open at about 7:45 a.m., SCDOT tweeted.
