Sunday crash shuts down major interstate running through the Midlands

A section of a major highway running through Columbia was blocked Sunday by a wreck and emergency responders, according to the South Carolina Department of Transportation.

The crash occurred just before noon on Interstate 26, near Exit 111A, the SCDOT said on Twitter. That is the exit with a junction to U.S. 1 in Lexington County.

All of the eastbound lanes of I-26 were blocked, as SCDOT cameras showed no drivers in the area near the collision.

About 30 minutes after the crash the interstate was reopened, according to SCDOT and traffic was flowing again through the area.

Injuries were reported in the wreck, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.

Information on the number of vehicles involved, or the amount of people hurt and their conditions, was not available.

This was one of six collisions reported on roads in Lexington and Richland counties between 8 a.m. and noon Sunday, according to the Department of Public Safety. Injuries were reported in three of the incidents, but further information was not available.
