Busy Columbia road shut down after gas line is cut, fire department says

UPDATE: The gas leak was resolved after 5 p.m., according to the Columbia Fire Department, but the road remains closed while Dominion Energy workers continue to make repairs.

Original Story

A busy road was shut down Wednesday morning after a gas line was cut, the Columbia Fire Department said.

Traffic was blocked in both directions on a stretch of Broad River Road, the fire department said on Twitter.

Shortly after 10 a.m., the fire department tweeted a natural gas line had been cut.

The gas line was cut near the intersection with Bickley Road, where traffic is stopped, according to the tweet. That’s in Irmo, near the junction with Interstate 26 at Exit 101, where a South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles office and Plex HiWire Family Fun & Sports Center are located.

A crew working in the area hit the line, causing the rupture, fire department spokesman Mike DeSumma told The State.

No injuries were reported and evacuations were not ordered, DeSumma said.

Drivers are told to find alternative routes and to avoid the area, as crews from Dominion Energy work on repairs.

Information on when the road will reopen was not available.
