Driver dies in Columbia wreck, South Carolina Highway Patrol says
One person died after a single-vehicle collision on a Columbia road Saturday night, South Carolina Highway Patrol said.
The crash happened just after 6 p.m. on Koon Store Road, near the intersection with William Duffie Road, Lance Cpl. Matt Southern said. Koon Store Road runs in between Wilson Boulevard (U.S. 21) and Winnsboro Road (U.S. 321).
A 1995 Honda was heading west on Koon Store Road when it ran off the right side of the road and smashed into a tree, Highway Patrol reported.
The driver of the Honda was not wearing a seat belt and was killed, according to Southern.
The Richland County Coroner’s Office will publicly identify the driver after notifying the next of kin.
No other injuries were reported.
The collision is still under investigation by Highway Patrol.
This was the first of two deadly crashes on Midlands roads Saturday night. The driver of a 1998 Toyota Camry was not wearing a seat belt when killed in a wreck on Boiling Springs Road in Lexington around 10 p.m., Southern said.
A month into 2020, 49 people have died on South Carolina roads, according to the Department of Public Safety. Of those deaths, 36 of the victims had access to seat belts, and 24 were not wearing safety restraints, DPS said.
