Drivers heading toward Columbia delayed by crash on interstate
A collision backed up traffic for miles and caused delays during the Tuesday morning commute for drivers heading toward Columbia.
The crash happened just before 8 a.m. on Interstate 20, the South Carolina Department of Transportation said on Twitter.
Two eastbound lanes were closed near Exit 63, which is the Bush River Road exit just after the highway goes from Lexington County into Richland County. That is near the area known as Malfunction Junction.
Emergency vehicles — including ambulances, fire trucks, police cars — blocked the lanes on I-20, along with the wreck where at least one vehicle was flipped on its roof, SCDOT cameras showed.
A tractor trailer truck was also involved in the collision, South Carolina Highway Patrol told The State.
The South Carolina Department of Public Safety reported the collision, but did not say if any injuries were reported.
Congestion on the interstate stretched back at least four miles, according to SCDOT cameras.
Westbound lanes were backed up from mile marker 63 to 61, in the area of the crash, but no lanes were closed, SCDOT tweeted.
Traffic was flowing smoothly once drivers cleared the scene and approached Exit 64, cameras showed.
Although several vehicles were still pulled off to the right shoulder of I-20, all of the lanes reopened at about 8:45 a.m., SCDOT tweeted.
The road was cleared just before 9:30 a.m., according to a tweet.
