Coroner: Lexington County man dies after collision with semi-truck on Interstate 20

An early morning collision on Interstate 20 in Kershaw County left a Lexington County man dead, according to the coroner.

The fatal wreck happened about 1:25 a.m. near mile marker 94, which is about 6 miles south of Camden, Trooper Tyler Tidwell of the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

Kershaw County Coroner David West identified the victims as 22-year-old Joseph Edward Klinger of Irmo.

Klinger drove a BMW westbound on I-20. He struck the rear of a Volvo semi-truck and lost control, Tidwell said. The BMW overturned and Klinger was thrown out of the vehicle, according to West. The car came to a halt on the cables in the median.

Paramedics pronounced Klinger dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to Tidwell.

The driver of the semi-truck, a 53-year-old North Carolina man, was wearing a seat belt and was not injured, Tidwell said.
