Crash blocks traffic heading toward Columbia on interstate in Lexington County
Drivers heading toward Columbia were stuck in traffic during the Thursday morning commute following a collision on a highway.
The crash happened just after 9 a.m. on a section of Interstate 20 running through Lexington County, the South Carolina Department of Transportation said on Twitter.
One eastbound lane near Exit 58 was blocked by a vehicle that was disabled in the wreck, according to the tweet. That’s the exit for U.S. 1 and heading toward West Columbia and the Columbia Metropolitan Airport.
No injuries were reported in the collision, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.
Information on the cause of the collision, and the number of vehicles involved was not available.
There was no word if wet roads from steady rain over the past day were a factor in the crash.
SCDOT traffic cameras showed one of the lanes on I-20 looked like a parking lot, with a traffic jam that backed drivers up for miles.
The delays were longer because drivers were unable to move into the open lane since a concrete barrier separated them as part of an ongoing traffic shift on the highway to widen the road.
Cars were flowing smoothly in the left lane, SCDOT cameras showed.
It was about 10 a.m. when the highway was cleared, SCDOT tweeted.
