Lane closures planned on two interstates running through the Midlands
Two of the busiest roads running through the Midlands will have lanes closed in the next few days.
Both Interstate 26 and Interstate 20 will be diverting traffic as repairs and improvements are made on the highways.
An eastbound lane on I-20 will be closed Tuesday night, the Lexington Police Department said on Twitter.
The lane called the “local lane,” will be closed from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Wednesday, on the stretch between mile marker 54 and 60, according to the tweet.
Drivers taking this stretch of I-20 in Lexington County will not have access to Exit 55 and Exit 58, affecting drivers heading to Augusta Road (U.S. 1) and South Lake Drive (S.C. 6), police said.
The on ramps to I-20 at those roads will be closed, and drivers will have to take Sunset Boulevard (U.S. 378) and use Exit 61 to enter the interstate.
Since November, drivers have been unable to switch lanes from Exit 51 (Longs Pond Road) to Exit 61 (U.S. 378) on I-20 since a concrete barrier separated them as part of an ongoing traffic shift on the highway to widen the road.
There will be a lane closure heading from Columbia toward the Upstate on I-26, the South Carolina Department of Transportation said.
One lane on a stretch of I-26 westbound between Exit 97 and Exit 85 will be closed from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, according to SCDOT. The same stretch will be shut down again from March 2-5, SCDOT said in a news release.
Exit 97, the junction with U.S. 176, is in Richland County, and I-20 runs through Lexington County to Newberry County at Exit 85 (S.C. 202).
The repairs on I-26 are a part of the SCDOT Midlands Connection Project to improve I-26 from Little Mountain to Irmo, according to the release.
Please use caution while driving through work zones, SCDOT said.
