Wreck blocks interstate in Columbia and causes injuries, SC officials say
A crash on a foggy Wednesday morning in the Midlands caused injuries and blocked a section of an interstate running through Richland County.
The collision occurred at about 8 a.m. on Interstate 77, the South Carolina Department of Transportation said on Twitter.
Two southbound lanes on I-77 were closed near Exit 5, the Bluff Road exit in Columbia, according to the tweet.
Injuries were reported in the wreck, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.
Information on the number of people hurt, and their conditions, was not available.
There was no word on what caused the crash, but the South Carolina Highway Patrol warned commuters to drive slowly and use caution during very foggy conditions.
“Dense fog is affecting much of the Midlands this morning so travelers are urged to use caution while driving and allow extra time to reach your destination,” the National Weather Service office in Columbia tweeted.
A dense fog advisory is in effect in Richland and Lexington counties until 11 a.m., according to the NWS.
All lanes of I-77 were reopened and traffic was flowing smoothly through the area at about 8:20 a.m., SCDOT traffic cameras showed.
