Busy Lexington road blocked after collision between car and boat on trailer, cops say

A multi-vehicle crash involving a boat on a trailer has closed a busy road and created delays for drivers on the morning commute, the Lexington police Department said.

The wreck was reported at about 7:30 a.m. after it happened at the intersection of Augusta Road (U.S. 1) and Cedarcrest Drive, police said on Twitter. That is a busy area, densely packed with retail businesses and restaurants, and is near the main branch of the Lexington County Public Library.

The inbound lanes were closed as emergency personnel responded to the collision, police tweeted.

Pictures from the scene show a four-door sedan smashed into the back of a trailer carrying a bass boat.

Cpl. Cameron Mortenson told The State the driver of that car was entrapped and was taken to an area hospital after being freed by the Lexington County Fire Department.

Further information on her condition was not available.

She is the driver at fault, according to Mortenson. She was following too closely and driving too fast for conditions, Mortenson said.

The driver with the trailer said he owned the boat for about a year, WACH reported.

Police ask drivers to avoid the area until the roads are reopened, and to proceed with caution.

The road was cleared and all lanes were reopened at about 9:30 a.m., police said.
