All lanes of interstate blocked after hit-and-run causes injuries at busy Columbia road
An early morning hit-and-run collision caused injuries and blocked traffic on an interstate running through Richland County Sunday.
The crash happened at about 6 a.m. on Interstate 77, the South Carolina Department of Transportation said on Twitter.
Multiple northbound lanes of I-77 were blocked following the wreck near Exits 9A/9B in Columbia, according to the tweet. That’s the exit for Garner’s Ferry Road, with junctions to U.S. 76 and U.S. 378, in northeast Richland County.
Injuries were reported in the collision that was determined to be a hit-and-run, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.
A pedestrian was hurt in the crash, South Carolina Highway patrol Trooper Tyler Tidwell told The State.
Information on the number of other people injured and their conditions was not available.
There was no description of the vehicle or driver who fled the scene following the crash.
Traffic cameras showed emergency vehicles — including law enforcement, ambulances and fire trucks — on the scene hours after the wreck occurred, causing delays even with limited amounts of drivers on the highway.
Nearly four hours after the collision, all northbound lanes on the highway were blocked, SCDOT tweeted.
It was not until about five hours after the wreck, at about 11:15 a.m., that SCDOT said all lanes on I-77 were reopened.
The crash is being investigated by Highway Patrol.
