Crash causes injuries, blocks drivers heading toward Columbia on morning commute

An early morning collision blocked part of a an interstate running through Lexington County and caused injuries.

The crash happened just before 5:15 a.m. on Interstate 20, near Exit 51, the South Carolina Department of Public Safety reported. That’s the Long Pond Road exit, in between Gilbert and Lexington.

All of the eastbound lanes were blocked, creating delays for drivers heading toward Columbia on the morning commute, the South Carolina Department of Transportation said on Twitter.

More than two hours after the wreck, one of the eastbound lanes was opened, according to SCDOT.

Traffic cameras showed vehicles remained backed up and moving slowly on I-20 even after the lane was opened at about 7:15 a.m.

Injuries were reported in the collision, according to the DPS.

Information on the number of people hurt, and their conditions, was not available.

There is no word on what caused the collision.

At about 7:30 a.m., all lanes of the highway had reopened, according to SCDOT.
