Collision causes injuries, blocks drivers on interstate in Malfunction Junction

A collision caused injuries and a traffic jam for drivers on the Tuesday morning commute toward Columbia.

The crash occurred before 8 a.m. on Interstate 26, near the junction with Interstate 20, an area better known as Malfunction Junction.

All eastbound lanes were blocked on I-26 at Exit 108A, the South Carolina Department of Transportation said on Twitter. That’s the exit for Bush River Road on a section of the highway running through Richland County.

Injuries were reported in the crash, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.

Information on the number of people hurt, and their conditions, was not available.

I-26 looked like a parking lot, with vehicles backed up and not moving for miles, traffic cameras showed.

Expect delays as troopers and fire service work to clear the roadway,” said Master Trooper David Jones of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

There was no word on what caused the collision, but it occurred moments after another crash on I-26 at Exit 107A, according to SCDOT. That’s the exit for I-20, with traffic heading to Augusta or Florence.

On the opposite side of I-26, a westbound lane was closed at about 8:15 a.m. following a collision near the junction with SC-126, SCDOT tweeted. That lane was reopened about 10 minutes after the wreck was reported.
