Man dies after being hit by car on busy Columbia road, coroner says

A homeless man was killed after he was hit by a car on a busy Columbia road overnight, the Richland County Coroner’s Office said Wednesday.

The crash happened at about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday on Forest Drive, near Lakeshore Drive, Coroner Gary Watts said in a news release. That’s close to the Shandon Baptist Church.

Gary Conner was in the road when he was hit by a vehicle, according to the release.

The 52-year-old homeless man died at the scene, Watts said.

An autopsy determined that blunt force trauma was Conner’s cause of death, according to the release.

No other injuries were reported.

Information on possible criminal charges was not available.

Conner’s death remains under investigation by the coroner’s office.
