Lexington man killed in motorcycle crash on interstate identified by coroner

One person was killed Sunday in a motorcycle crash on an interstate running through Lexington County, South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

The motorcycle rider was identified as Richard Z. McCormick, according to Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher.

The collision happened just before 1:30 p.m. on Interstate 20, near the 53 mile marker, Master Trooper David Jones said Monday. That’s near the Lexington town line and Exit 55.

The wreck occurred when the 30-year-old Lexington man, who was heading west, ran off the right side of I-20, according to Jones.

McCormick was ejected from the 2009 Kawasaki and was not wearing a helmet, Highway Patrol reported.

He was taken to a hospital in Richland County where he died, Jones said.

The motorcycle was the only vehicle involved in the crash, and no other injuries were reported.

Information on what caused the biker to run off the interstate was not available.

The collision is being investigated by Highway Patrol.

Prior to this wreck, nine motorcycle riders have been killed on South Carolina roads in 2020, according to the Department of Public Safety. In those collisions six crash victims were not wearing a helmet, DPS reported.

It was at least the second deadly motorcycle crash in South Carolina this weekend.

Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger said Stephen Demont Lucas, 52, died Friday after wrecking a bike in Boiling Springs, WHNS reported.
