Burning vehicle shuts down interstate running through Richland County

A burning vehicle had drivers heading west from Columbia stuck in traffic during the Tuesday morning commute.

All of the westbound lanes on Interstate 26 were blocked on a stretch running through Richland County, the South Carolina Department of Transportation said on Twitter.

The car fire happened near Exit 97, which is just beyond the Lexington County line, and is the junction with U.S. 176.

The fire was first reported at 9:24 a.m., according to the tweet.

Information on possible injuries was not made available by the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.

Vehicles were stopped for a long stretch on I-26, traffic cameras showed.

There was no word on what caused the fire.

Traffic was flowing steadily at about 10 a.m., SCDOT cameras showed.
