Midlands man killed after car crashes into pole, SC officials say

A Midlands man was killed Tuesday in a single-vehicle collision near his home, the Sumter County Coroner’s Office said.

The crash happened at about 1:45 p.m. on Plowden Mill Road, according to Master Trooper David Jones of the South Carolina Highway Patrol. That’s in the area of downtown Sumter.

Torin Vershawn Johnson was killed in the wreck, Coroner Robbie Baker said in a news release.

The 26-year-old Sumter man was heading south on Plowden Mill in a 2015 Chrysler 4-door when he ran off the right side of the road and smashed into a utility pole, Jones said.

Johnson was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene, according to Highway Patrol.

Baker said an autopsy will be performed Wednesday at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston.

The crash remains under investigation by the coroner’s office and Highway Patrol.

Prior to the collision, 179 people have died on South Carolina roads in 2020, according to the Department of Public Safety. Of those deaths, 126 of the victims had access to seat belts, and 61 were not wearing safety restraints, DPS said.

An earlier version of this story incorrectly listed the age of the victim. The State regrets the error.
