Burning vehicle blocks traffic near Malfunction Junction

A vehicle fire in the area known as Malfunction Junction created delays for drivers making the Tuesday morning commute toward Columbia.

Two lanes were closed by the burning car on the westbound side of Interstate 26, the South Carolina Department of Transportation said on Twitter.

The traffic jam was reported at about 7:45 a.m., and is near Exit 106, according to the tweet. That is the last exit in Lexington County, near the line with Richland County, and the junction with St. Andrews Road.

Information on possible injuries was not available, but the South Carolina Department of Public Safety responded to the fire.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known, and there was no word if any other vehicles were damaged by the blaze.

Not all lanes of I-26 were blocked and traffic was still moving, but at a much slower clip, traffic cameras showed.

The disabled, burning vehicle was moved to the shoulder of the highway, and traffic began to flow again at about 8:30 a.m., according to the SCDOT.

This is a developing story, check back for updates.
