Women in early 20s killed in crash just outside Midlands, SC coroner says
Two women in their early 20s were killed Saturday in a single-vehicle crash just outside the Midlands, officials said.
The collision happened at 4:20 p.m. on Weaver Road, near the intersection with Bland Baptist Church Road, said Master Trooper Gary Miller of the South Carolina Highway Patrol. That’s about 25 miles west of Lexington County.
Shakeria Harris, 20, and Brittany McQueen, 21, died at the scene, Edgefield County Coroner David Burnett told The State on Sunday morning.
Burnett said Harris — a Trenton, S.C. resident — was driving, with McQueen, of Graniteville, a passanger.
The vehicle was heading north on Weaver Road when it ran off the right side and smashed into an embankment before hitting a tree and flipping over, according to Miller.
Neither Harris nor McQueen was wearing a seat belt, Miller said.
Both died from injuries they suffered in what Burnett called an accident, though information on what caused the incident was not immediately available. The wreck remains under investigation by Highway Patrol and the coroner’s office.
Prior to this most recent collision, 217 people have died on South Carolina roads in 2020, according to the Department of Public Safety. Of those deaths, 151 of the victims had access to seat belts, and 76 were not wearing safety restraints.
