Coroner identifies woman killed in overnight crash on Midlands road

One person was killed late Monday night in a car crash on a Midlands road, South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 11:15 p.m. on S.C. 34, near the intersection with S.C. 39, Master Trooper David Jones said. That’s near a U.S. Postal Service office in Chapells, about 17 miles from Newberry.

The driver of a 2002 Ford four-door sedan was killed in the wreck, according to Jones.

Kimberly Sue Childs, 47, was identified as the driver, according to Newberry County Coroner Laura Kneece.

The Ford was heading east on S.C. 34 when it ran off the right side of the road, hit a ditch, and flipped over, Highway Patrol reported.

The Greenwood resident was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the car during the crash, according to Jones.

Jones said the driver died at the scene.

An autopsy showed Childs died of blunt force trauma, according to Kneece.

Information on what caused the collision was not available, but the wreck is being investigated by Highway Patrol and the coroner’s office.

Prior to this collision, 222 people have died on South Carolina roads in 2020, according to the Department of Public Safety. Of those deaths, 154 of the victims had access to seat belts, and 79 were not wearing safety restraints.
