Two killed when SUV crashes into multiple dump trucks, SC Highway Patrol says
Two people were killed and a third person was hospitalized following a wreck where an SUV crashed into multiple dump trucks Tuesday morning, South Carolina Highway Patrol said.
The three-vehicle collision happened at about 6:45 a.m. at the intersection of S.C. 9 and Dudley Road, Master Trooper Gary Miller said. That’s about 30 miles north of the Midlands.
The driver of an SUV was heading south on Dudley Road and disregarded a stop while attempting to cross S.C. 9, according to Miller.
After failing to yield the right of way, the SUV was first hit by a dump truck heading west on S.C. 9 before smashing into another dump truck traveling east on the road, Highway Patrol reported.
The drivers of the SUV and the eastbound dump truck were killed in the wreck and died at the scene, Miller said.
The driver of the westbound dump truck was hurt and had to be airlifted by helicopter to an area hospital, according to Miller.
Information on that driver’s condition was not available.
The Chesterfield County Coroner’s Office will publicly identify the drivers killed in the crash after notifying the next of kin.
There was no word if the drivers were wearing seat belts.
The collision is being investigated by Highway Patrol.
