Overturned tractor trailer blocks traffic for hours on interstate in Columbia

Two people were hospitalized and traffic was backed up for hours after a tractor trailer overturned on an interstate running through Columbia on Tuesday afternoon.

The 18-wheel truck flipped over just before noon near the Bluff Road exit on Interstate 77, the South Carolina Department of Transportation said on Twitter.

All southbound lanes of I-77 were blocked by the wreck, according to the tweet. At 2:15 p.m., traffic cameras showed the backup of vehicles on the highway for about a mile.

Drivers were asked to seek alternative routes and to avoid I-77 before reaching the Bluff Road exit.

Two people on the semi were taken from the scene by EMS, according to the Columbia Fire Department.

Further information on their conditions was not available.

There was no word if any other vehicles were involved in the incident, but no other injuries were reported by the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.

Around 2:30 p.m. I-77 was reopened and traffic cameras showed vehicles flowing through the area without issue.
