Collision blocks traffic on interstate heading toward Columbia

Drivers making the Thursday morning commute toward Columbia were stuck in traffic following a crash on an interstate running through Lexington County.

The collision happened just before 8:45 a.m. near Exit 58 on Interstate 20, the South Carolina Department of Transportation said on Twitter. That’s the junction with U.S. 1, towards West Columbia.

One of the eastbound lanes was blocked by the wreck, which caused drivers to be backed up for miles, traffic cameras showed.

No injuries were reported in the crash, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.

Information on the cause of the collision, or the number of vehicles involved was not available.

The delays were longer because drivers were unable to move into the open lane since a concrete barrier separated them as part of an ongoing traffic shift on the highway to widen the road.

SCDOT tweeted I-20 reopened at about 9:20 a.m., and traffic cameras showed vehicles flowing on the highway.
