Driver killed in crash that blocks interstate in Lexington County for hours, cops say

One person was killed in an early morning collision that shut down a section of a major interstate running through Lexington County for hours, South Carolina Highway Patrol said Thursday.

The driver of a Ford F-150 pickup truck died after running off Interstate 20, near mile marker 61, Cpl. Sonny Collins said. That’s near the Richland County line, and the exit for U.S. 378 toward Lexington and West Columbia.

The single-vehicle wreck happened minutes before 3 a.m. on the westbound side of I-20, according to Collins.

The 2008 Ford truck had just crossed into Lexington County when it ran off the road to the right and smashed into a guard rail, Collins said.

The driver was the vehicle’s only occupant and was killed, according to Collins.

Following the collision, all westbound lanes of I-20 were blocked for about an hour, the South Carolina Department of Transportation said on Twitter. Two westbound lanes remained closed until about 5 a.m., according to SCDOT.

Information if the driver was wearing a seat belt was not available.

There was no word on what caused the pickup truck to veer off the interstate.

The Lexington County Coroner’s Office will publicly identify the driver after notifying the next of kin.

This is a developing story, check back for updates.
