Man killed overnight in truck crash on road just outside the Midlands, coroner says

A man was killed in a Sunday morning crash on a road just outside the Midlands, officials said.

According to Cpl. Sonny Collins of the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the single-vehicle collision occurred after 2 a.m. on Pine Log Road.

Randall D. Sapp of Beech Island died at the scene of the wreck at 3:15 a.m., said Aiken County Coroner Darryl Ables in a news release.

Sapp, 48, was the only person in the Chevrolet pickup truck that ran off Pine Log Road, near the intersection with Wise Drive — about 55 miles southwest of the Midlands — according to Ables.

Collins said Sapp was not wearing a seat belt when the Chevy ran off the right side of the road and smashed into several trees, while Ables reported Sapp was ejected from the truck and died of blunt force injuries.

Information on what caused the collision was not immediately available, though Ables said toxicology analysis is pending. The crash remains under investigation by Highway Patrol.

Through Friday, 274 people have died on South Carolina roads in 2020, according to the Department of Public Safety. Of those deaths, 193 of the victims had access to seat belts, and 105 were not wearing safety restraints.
