Burning vehicle blocks highway running through Columbia

All westbound lanes of a major highway running through Columbia were shut down Sunday afternoon following a vehicle fire.

The burning car created a traffic jam for drivers on S.C. 126, the South Carolina Department of Transportation said on Twitter.

Beginning shortly after 1:30 p.m., the highway was blocked near the exit for Greystone Boulevard and the Riverbanks Zoo and Gardens.

Information on injuries was not made available by the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.

There was no word on what started the fire, but traffic cameras showed a smoldering vehicle on the right shoulder of the road.

Emergency responders, including fire trucks and police cars could also be seen on the traffic cameras.

Information on when the road would completely reopen was not available, but one lane was open to traffic at about 2:10 p.m.

This is a developing story, check back for updates.
