One killed, another hospitalized following wreck on Midlands-area road, SC cops say

One person was killed and another was hospitalized after two pickup trucks collided on a Midlands-area road Tuesday, South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

The wreck happened at about 2:45 p.m. at the intersection of S.C. 441 and Green Lane, Master Trooper David Jones said Wednesday. That’s about 40 miles east of Richland County.

The man driving a 2011 Ford truck was heading west on Green Lane when he disregarded a stop sign and smashed into the side of a Dodge truck traveling south on S.C. 441, according to Jones.

The driver of the Dodge was taken to a hospital in Columbia and died from injuries caused by the crash, Highway Patrol reported.

The Lee County Coroner’s Office will publicly identify the driver after notifying the next of kin.

The man driving the Ford was airlifted by helicopter to Prisma Health in Richland County, Jones said. Further information on his condition was not available.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts, according to Jones.

Information on possible criminal charges was not available, but the collision remains under investigation by Highway Patrol.

Through Tuesday, 284 people have died on South Carolina roads in 2020, according to the Department of Public Safety.
