Midlands man killed in Lexington County crash identified by coroner

A Midlands man was killed in a crash on Saturday, the Lexington County Coroner’s Office said.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 3:30 p.m. on Church Street in Gaston near the intersection with Fish Hatchery Road, according to Master Trooper David Jones of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

A 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe was heading north on the road when the wreck happened, Jones said.

Demetrius A. Holman was driving the Chevy in the 1400 block of Church Street when it ran off the left side of the road, and when he overcorrected, the SUV flipped multiple times, Coroner Margaret Fisher said in a news release.

The 39-year-old St. Matthews resident was not wearing a seat belt, according to the release.

He was ejected from the SUV as it overturned and Holman died at the scene, Jones said.

There were no other occupants in the vehicle, and no other injuries were reported by Jones.

Information on what caused the Chevy to veer to the left of the road was not available, but the crash remains under investigation by Highway Patrol.

Through Friday, 292 people have died on South Carolina roads in 2020, according to the Department of Public Safety. Of those deaths, 210 of the victims had access to seat belts, and 116 were not wearing safety restraints, DPS said.
