Columbia man killed in crash identified by Richland County Coroner
The Columbia man killed in a two-vehicle collision over the weekend was identified Tuesday by the Richland County Coroner’s Office.
Johnny Dickerson, 67, died at the scene of the Sunday night crash at the intersection of Mountain Brook Drive and Leesburg Road, Coroner Gary Watts said in a news release. That’s less than two miles from Fort Jackson.
An autopsy showed Dickerson died of blunt force trauma, according to the release.
Two other people were hurt in the wreck that closed Leesburg Road for nearly two hours. Information on their condition was not available.
At about 10 p.m., Dickerson was driving a Toyota van west on Leesburg Road when a Ford Fusion — driven by a 63-year-old man — was heading in the opposite direction and crossed the center line where it crashed into the van head on, according to the Columbia Police Department.
The two people injured in the collision were taken to an area hospital, police said.
Information was not available if Dickerson, or the other two people, were wearing a seat belt at the time of the wreck.
The crash remains under investigation by police and the coroner’s office.
Over the Memorial Day Weekend, from Friday through Monday, 13 people were killed in crashes on South Carolina roads, according to the Department of Public Safety.
As of Tuesday afternoon, 311 people have died on South Carolina roads in 2020, the Department of Public Safety said.
