Traffic backed up for miles by crash on interstate running through Richland County

Traffic was snarled and backed up for miles Thursday morning following a crash on an interstate running through Richland County.

A westbound lane on Interstate 26 was blocked following the collision, the South Carolina Department of Transportation said on Twitter.

The wreck happened at about 9:30 a.m. near Exit 101A on I-26, according to the tweet. That’s the junction with U.S. 76 and U.S. 176 (Broad River Road) in Columbia.

No injuries were reported in the crash, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.

The highway looked like a parking lot with vehicles stuck in the jam, traffic cameras showed.

Information on the number of vehicles involved, or the cause of the collision, was not available.

As of 11:15 a.m., there was no word on how long it would take to reopen all lanes on I-26.

This is a developing story, check back for updates.
