12-year-old girl killed in overnight wreck, Lexington County Coroner says
A 12-year-old girl was killed and two other people were hospitalized Tuesday night in a crash, the Lexington County Coroner’s Office said.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 8:15 p.m. on Bub Shumpert Road, near the intersection with Hartley Quarter Road, said Lance Cpl. Tyler Tidwell of the South Carolina Highway Patrol. That’s about three miles from Pelion High School.
The back seat passenger riding in the 1999 Honda Passport died after the SUV ran off the left side of the road, according to Tidwell. The passenger was identified as Stacy Elizabeth Bagwell, Coroner Margaret Fisher said Wednesday in a news release.
The Honda smashed into a tree and flipped after veering of Bub Shumpert Road, Tidwell said.
The Leesville girl was not wearing a seat belt, according to Highway Patrol. She died at the scene, Fisher said.
The driver and a front seat passenger were injured and taken to Prisma Health in Richland County, Highway Patrol reported.
Fisher said they suffered non-life-threatening injuries, but further information on their conditions was not available.
Tidwell said both front seat occupants were wearing seat belts during the collision.
There was no word on what caused the SUV to run off the road, and the crash remains under investigation by Highway Patrol.
Information on possible criminal charges was not available.
Through Tuesday, 331 people have died on South Carolina roads in 2020, according to the Department of Public Safety. Of those deaths, 233 of the victims had access to seat belts, and 127 were not wearing safety restraints, DPS reported.
