Crashed tractor trailer blocking traffic on interstate heading to Columbia

Traffic heading to Columbia on a major interstate was blocked Sunday after a tractor trailer overturned on the Midlands road, South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

The 18-wheeler flipped on its side, blocking all the westbound lanes of Interstate 20 near the 85 mile marker, Master Trooper David Jones said on Twitter. That’s near the county line between Richland and Kershaw counties, close to Exit 87, for White Pond Road and Elgin.

The wreck happened at about 10 a.m., according to the South Carolina Department of Transportation. As of noon, traffic cameras showed no vehicles heading through that stretch of I-20.

No injuries were reported in the flipped semi, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.

A wrecker arrived at about 11:45 a.m. to haul the truck from the road, Jones said.

Until the truck is removed and I-20 is fully reopened, Jones said detours are in place and drivers can expect delays.

Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area if possible.

Information on what caused the truck to overturn was not available.

This is a developing story, check back for updates.
