A busy road has been blocked to traffic after a sewer collapsed Monday, Columbia Water said.

Part of Blossom Street, in addition to a section of East Chapel Road, have been closed because of an emergency, Columbia Water officials said on Twitter.

A sewer mainline collapsed, according to the tweet.

The closed roads are in the middle of a triangulated area between Beltline Boulevard, Devine Street and Rosewood Drive. There are several restaurants and retail businesses in that area.

Information on what caused the sewer collapse was not available.

There was no word on how long the roads would be blocked, or when the sewer would be repaired, but drivers are asked to find alternative routes of travel.

This was not the only Columbia road closed Monday because of an incident.

A section of Hard Scrabble Road was closed after a cut natural gas line, the Columbia Fire Department tweeted just before 11:30 a.m. The road was closed at the intersection with Fowler Street,

That’s close to the intersection of Hard Scrabble and Farrow roads where several restaurants and businesses are located.

Residents and the businesses are not being evacuated, and Dominion Energy employees are on the scene to help, fire department spokesman Mike DeSumma told The State.

The roads were reopened at about 2:30 p.m., according to the fire department.
