Tractor trailer hits, kills pedestrian on Midlands road, SC Highway Patrol says

One person was killed on a Midlands road overnight after getting hit by a tractor trailer, South Carolina Highway Patrol said Thursday.

The pedestrian was hit by an 18-wheel truck on the U.S. 76 Bypass just minutes before midnight, Cpl. Sonny Collins said. It happened near Miller Road, where it becomes Frontage Road.

The person was trying to walk across the four-lane highway when the collision occurred, according to Collins.

The Sumter County Coroner’s Office will publicly identify the person after notifying the next of kin.

The semi driver was not hurt in the crash, and no charges are expected, Collins said.

Through Wednesday, 375 people have died on South Carolina roads in 2020, according to the Department of Public Safety. Of those deaths, 62 were pedestrians, DPS reported.
