Two killed in wreck on Midlands road identified by coroner, another person in hospital

Two people were killed in a crash on a Midlands road Tuesday that left another person fighting for his life in an area hospital, South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

Tommy Odom, 60, of Cassatt, and 57-year-old Elgin resident Lori Brannon Holland were killed in the wreck, Kershaw County Coroner David West said in a news release.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of Dicey Creek Road and U.S. 1 (Jefferson Davis Highway), Master Trooper David Jones said. That’s in Camden, near Woodward Field Airport.

The driver of a 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier was heading east on Dicey Creek Road when he disregarded a stop sign at the intersection with U.S. 1, according to Jones. The Chevy crossed over the highway and smashed into a tree, Jones said.

The car was found in the front yard of a nearby home, according to West.

Odom, a passenger in the back seat, was ejected from the car and died at the scene, according to Jones. Odom was not wearing a seat belt, West said.

Brannon Holland was the front-seat passenger who was not wearing a seat belt and was entrapped in the Cavalier, according to Jones. She died while being taken to an area hospital, West said.

Jones said the driver also was not wearing a seat belt and was hospitalized after suffering life-threatening injuries.

Further information on the driver’s condition was not available.

There was no word on possible criminal charges, but Jones said the wreck remains under investigation by Highway Patrol.

Through Tuesday, 394 people have died on South Carolina roads in 2020, according to the Department of Public Safety. Of those deaths, 277 of the victims had access to seat belts, and 152 were not wearing safety restraints, DPS reported.
