Person trying to cross Bush River Road killed in collision, SC Highway Patrol says

South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating two separate deadly crashes that happened on Midlands roads Wednesday.

One person was killed while walking across Bush River Road, Master Trooper Brian Lee said.

The pedestrian was hit about 10:30 p.m. by a 2007 Ford Explorer, according to Lee.

The pedestrian was taken to an area hospital and later died, Lee said.

The Lexington County Coroner’s Office will publicly identify the pedestrian after notifying the next of kin.

The person driving the Ford SUV was wearing a seat belt, and no other injuries were reported by Lee.

Prior to this crash, 67 pedestrians had been killed on South Carolina roads so far this year, according to the Department of Public Safety.

The collision happened about nine hours after a person was killed in a wreck in Richland County.

A passenger in a 2002 Jeep Cherokee died and the driver was hospitalized following the single-vehicle crash that happened just after 1 p.m., according to Lee.

The Jeep was heading west on Weston Road in the Hopkins area when it ran off the right side of the road, Lee said. The driver overcorrected, causing the SUV to veer off the left side of the road, where it flipped over, according to Lee.

Neither the driver nor passenger were wearing a seat belt, Lee said. Further information on the driver’s condition was not available.

The passenger will be publicly identified by the Richland County Coroner’s Office after family is notified and an autopsy is performed.

Through Tuesday, 424 people have died on South Carolina roads in 2020, according to the Department of Public Safety. Of those deaths, 299 of the victims had access to seat belts, and 162 were not wearing safety restraints, DPS reported.

Information on possible criminal charges in either collision was not available, but both wrecks remain under investigation by Highway Patrol.
