Reckless drivers have been warned, more traffic patrols planned to keep roads safe
Drivers on Columbia-area roads will see an added law enforcement presence this week.
The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department said it is conducting additional traffic safety patrols.
The purpose is to eliminate collisions and unsafe driving practices — including speeding, DUI, distracted driving, in addition to proper seat belt use and stopping.
While deputies will increase their presence across the county, they will specifically keep a close eye on certain roads after receiving requests from the community.
The roads that will have additional patrols include:
▪ Irvin Jumper Street
▪ McCartha Road
▪ Piney Grove Road
▪ Augusta Highway (4400 block)
▪ Crooked Creek Road
▪ Cedar Grove Road
▪ Kyzer Road
▪ Mack Street
▪ Peeler Road
▪ Nottingwood Drive
“Traffic deputies will be out in these areas over the next few days conducting extra patrols,” the sheriff’s department said. “They’re looking for reckless drivers and those choosing to not obey traffic laws.”
Through Friday, 452 people have died on South Carolina roads in 2020, according to the Department of Public Safety. Of those deaths, 22 happened in Lexington County, DPS reported.
“Please wear your seat belt, mind the speed limits and don’t get behind the wheel under the influence,” the sheriff’s department said. “Stay safe, Lexington County!”
The period from Memorial Day to Labor Day is called the “100 Deadly Days of Summer” by law enforcement in South Carolina, which considers this stretch one of the most dangerous times of the year. In 2019, there were 266 traffic fatalities in South Carolina during this period, according to DPS.
