Hit-and-run driver wanted after deadly crash on Midlands road, SC Highway Patrol says

A search is underway for a driver involved in a deadly hit-and-run collision that happened on a Midlands road early Sunday morning, South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

The crash happened at about 1 a.m. near the intersection of U.S. 378 and U.S. 15, Cpl. Sonny Collins said. That’s near downtown Sumter, not far from a Walmart Supercenter and USC-Sumter.

A person walking across the street died after being hit by an unknown vehicle, according to Collins.

The pedestrian was identified as Gregory Jamar Wright, according to Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker.

The 26-year-old Sumter resident died at an area hospital, and an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, Baker said.

The driver left the scene, and Highway Patrol investigators are trying to identify the vehicle.

Highway Patrol said the suspected vehicle is a 2001-2006 silver GMC Yukon or Sierra pickup truck. The vehicle left the scene heading east on U.S. 378, and it should have damage to the grill area.

The “GMC” logo from the grill is missing, according to Highway Patrol.

Anyone with information is asked to call 803-896-9621 or CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or submit an online tip.

Through Friday, 477 people have died on South Carolina roads this year, including 76 pedestrians, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.
